5 Tips For Keeping Your Home Safe During Hurricane Season

Hurricane season has arrived! At Harmony, a master-planned community in Orlando, we encourage our residents to be prepared and protect themselves when the weather takes a turn for the worse. We understand how stressful and overwhelming it can be once a hurricane warning is issued for the state of Florida. Hopefully these five tips will ease some of your stress and help you feel more prepared! Are You Covered? Having the right insurance will help minimize your losses in the case of an emergency. Homeowners insurance will usually cover losses from wind, storm, and broken water pipes, and wind and hail insurance will usually cover damage due to storm winds in coastal areas. If you've taken steps to minimize storm damage on your home, many insurers will offer discounts on hurricane insurance. With mitigation improvements, you could save thousands of dollars annually. Ask a licensed, experienced insurance agent about the best coverage for your home.  Have a Hurricane Kit Ready Another important tip regarding hurricane prep for homes in Florida is to have a hurricane kit ready for when bad weather strikes, so you don't have to scramble to find everything you need at the last minute. At Harmony, we encourage every resident to include the following items in their hurricane kit as instructed by the National Hurricane Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
  • One gallon of water per person per day (for at least 3 days)
  • Supply of non-perishable food (for at least 3 days)
  • Battery- or hand-operated radio
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First-aid kit, including prescription medications
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Local maps
  • Manual can openers for food
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air, and duct tape and plastic sheeting to shelter-in-place
  • Supplies for your pets, if applicable
Protect Your Roof  Hurricanes are extremely powerful and can severely damage roofs. We suggest you secure your roof with hurricane straps to protect it against high winds that could pull off roof tiles, shingles, or even the underlying roof deck. You should contact a qualified professional to inspect your roof for any weak areas and to secure these hurricane straps properly.  Secure Your Garage Door Most garage doors are not reinforced to prevent powerful winds from coming in. Wind will enter your home if the garage door is blown off and will cause severe damage to your windows, doors, and your roof. You can purchase kits at your local home improvement store if you feel handy enough to do it yourself. If not, hire a qualified professional to properly secure it. Secure Your Windows and Doors  Broken windows can let in wind and rain during a storm. Use storm shutters or board up your windows before the storm arrives, and use deadbolts on your doors to prevent them from flying open. Be sure to secure all windows and doors on all sides of your home — not just the side facing the body of water where the hurricane could form! Hurricane winds can swirl in multiple directions, so it's best to be fully prepared. Here at Harmony, we care about our residents and their safety during hurricane season. As long as you stay prepared and well-informed, you can rest easy!
