  “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,” Pablo Picasso once said. Aside from artistic and creative expression, art serves many purposes. It can be a therapy of sorts. Studies have found that art therapy can affect individuals both psychologically and physiologically. Using our creative side can help our overall mental and physical state, but can also contribute to fighting effects of aging. So how does art help keep us sharp and fight aging? Participating in an artistic activities like painting, drawing or even coloring can reduce depression and anxiety and improve overall coordination and brain function. A testament to this research, Pablo Picasso lived until he was 91 and produced art up until his death. Henri Matisse was one in the same and created art up until his death at age 84. Working until age 84 is not common in everyday jobs, so it’s clear that these artists were still very sharp, and it is an example of how positively their mental state was affected by creating art on a daily basis.
